September is the month Lisbon comes home to itself. The light turns gentler, the stages and galleries reopen, and the city finds its own pace again after summer. These are the five we chose.

Culture. La Distance

Tiago Rodrigues sets his play in 2077, with part of humanity living on Mars and a father and daughter still talking across the space between them. Eighty-five minutes on what closeness asks of us when distance becomes the condition of a relationship.

Culturgest · until 20 September

Art. Pedro Cabrita Reis, com o coração livre de cuidados

Close to two hundred works by an artist who builds with what the city throws away. MAAT gives him the scale his work has always asked for, and this is the retrospective that will define the season.

MAAT · 16 September to 15 February

Event. Book 2.0

For two days in Belém, Lisbon gathers to talk about the future of reading: publishers, writers and the people who decide what reaches our shelves next. SWS is a partner this year, and the conversation began on the Journal with Silvia Pazos Rodríguez, the woman who spends a year building it.

CCB · 15 and 16 September

Design. Interwoven, Part II

Felipa Almeida and Omarcity bring nine designers and makers into a 1960s house in Sintra still waiting to be restored. New collaborative pieces sit beside each maker’s own work, and the address is shared only with those who sign up.

Sintra · 25 to 27 September

Gastronomy. Cabra Cega

Zé Costa and Tiago Brito cook over fire at a U-shaped counter, with the kitchen in full view. Two tasting menus of seven or ten courses, rooted in Portugal and wandering through Spain, Latin America and Australia. Serious cooking, worn lightly.

Cabra Cega · Restelo

Lisbon, back to itself.
