Defined by Creativity: Julie de Halleux of Lisbon by Design

How would you describe your personal journey into the world of collectible design, and what drew you to Lisbon as a creative base?

I was drawn to Lisbon by its extraordinary light and unique charm. When I arrived 11 years ago, the city had a certain raw beauty—romantic yet somewhat forgotten. I felt an emerging creative wave that would soon place Portugal on the global map. I have always been passionate about craftsmanship and collectible design, which—unlike contemporary art—remains deeply rooted in the human touch. Every piece is made by artisans, carrying the weight of tradition and the essence of slow creation. More and more architects are exploring collectible design as a way to express their identity. I love the idea that behind every piece, there is a story, a set of hands, and a creative mind to discover.

What does your creative process look like—how do you absorb inspiration, and how does that translate into curatorial choices?

My inspiration comes from every place I visit, whether through travels, museums, or cultural landmarks. I have a deep appreciation for simplicity, high-end materials, and designs that stand the test of time. When curating for Lisbon by Design, I seek diversity in materials while maintaining a sense of cohesion. More and more, I focus on sustainable approaches, ensuring that tradition evolves in a contemporary and responsible way.

Over the years, has your definition of success evolved? If so, how do you define it today—both personally and professionally?

For me, success is about working with inspiring people who share the same values. It’s about exchanging good energy, fostering meaningful collaborations, and being recognized by my peers. It’s not just about visibility—it’s about creating something that has a lasting impact on the creative landscape.

You have a remarkable eye for detail and storytelling through space. What fuels your passion for design and craftsmanship on a deeper level?

I come from a family deeply rooted in creativity. My father was an artisan—a harpsichord maker—my grandmother a painter. I grew up surrounded by craftsmanship and artistic expression. This early exposure shaped my understanding of aesthetics and gave me an appreciation for the power of detail.

I believe that design is not just about objects; it’s about the emotions they evoke and the stories they carry.

What was the initial spark behind Lisbon by Design, and what gap did you feel it needed to fill in Portugal’s creative landscape?

I founded Lisbon by Design to bring together talented artisans and designers under a collaborative platform. My goal was to elevate Portuguese design to an international level and prove that it could compete on the global stage. I am proud to say that I was among the first to believe in this vision. Today, some of the designers presented at the fair are exhibited in prestigious galleries and collections worldwide.

How do you go about selecting the artists and designers for the fair? Is there a common thread that connects them, or is contrast part of the curation?

Every year, we launch an open call to attract new talents. I also spend a lot of time in artists’ studios, learning about their work and techniques. This direct engagement helps me build a carefully curated selection where craftsmanship, innovation, and timeless design come together. The diversity of materials and approaches is intentional, but the pieces always share a sense of authenticity and excellence.

What role do you see Lisbon by Design playing in shaping the future of Portuguese contemporary craft and collectible design, locally and internationally?

Lisbon by Design is both a platform and a movement. It promotes Portuguese craftsmanship by connecting it to both local and international audiences while also encouraging a new generation of designers to push boundaries. By highlighting the value of collectible design, we are helping traditional techniques evolve and remain relevant in a contemporary context.

What can we expect from this year’s edition? Are there any highlights or new directions you’re particularly excited about?

This year marks the 5th edition of the fair, featuring 28 participants—all working in Portugal, and most of them new to Lisbon by Design. One of the main highlights will be an installation by De La Espada, curated by designer Sam Baron, exploring the art of seating and inspired by the iconic Benetton Fabrica (Benetton’s communication research center and creative hub for young designers, artists, and thinkers). I love it when design takes an experimental approach, and this installation embodies that spirit. Additionally, for the first time, we are hosting talks on sustainable design in Portugal—an essential discussion that will encourage designers to move towards more responsible practices.

Success is about working with inspiring people who share your values. It’s about energy, collaboration, and impact—not just visibility.

What advice would you give to women building their own path in the creative industries?

Believe in your vision and surround yourself with people who uplift and challenge you. The creative industry can be demanding, but staying true to your values and trusting your instincts is essential. Build a strong network, be open to learning, and don’t be afraid to carve out your own space. Passion and resilience will always set you apart.
